San Jose Dominates To Open 2025 MLS Season

Writer: Jose RochaJose Rocha

The Quakes took on Real Salt Lake, who have been a strong competitor in the Western Conference, placing 3rd in the conference last season. With the arrival of a new season, there is always hope that a new year will bring about different outcomes.

Last year, the San Jose Earthquakes ended at the bottom of the table with one of the worst records ever, conceding the most goals in the season. Therefore, there was essentially only an opportunity to improve.

The San Jose Earthquakes utilized a 3–5–2 formation, incorporating both new and returning players. Jamar Ricketts took the position of left midfielder, while Beau Leroux made his MLS debut. Both had previously been part of the Earthquakes' developmental team at The Town FC. I recall speaking with Ricketts before some of The Town FC games, and it was evident early on that his skills were distinctive. Beau Leroux was another player who effectively commanded the midfield for The Town, and it was clear these players merited a chance on the main team, but Bruce Arena went even further.

The San Jose Earthquakes started the game off quickly with breakthroughs while also not abandoning their overall defense among all players. The Best way that I can describe the San Jose Earthquakes effort throughout the game was honestly like a human pinball machine game. The ball movement was quick and often which is different that the Quakes have showcased in the last two seasons.

The Quakes held their positions tightly to each other and utilized open spaces and angles with left and right wingers, but the midfield was the group making sure the ball was in the right position to set it up for the playmakers. In the 28th minute of the game, Beau Leroux made a crucial pass which allowed Jamar Ricketts to find the back of the net for Ricketts first MLS goal, and Leroux's first MLS assist in his first official MLS game.

San Jose maintained their defensive stance for the rest of the first half, with goalkeeper Daniel delivering outstanding defensive performances. A major focus for the Earthquakes in the off-season was improving their defense after conceding numerous goals last season, and it was on display after RSL made some cuts through, but wasn't able to capitalize.

The Quakes continued to push with confidence in the second half, and they were rewarded with a corner kick from Espinoza which ended with a goal scoring header from Rodrigues which extended the Quakes lead to 2-0. in the 70th minute.

Bruce Arena showcased San Jose's depth with substitutions, bringing on Ousseni Bouda off the bench to replace Josef Martinez. Bouda very quickly adapted to the momentum that the team had built and capitalized by scoring a goal of his own in the 74th minute, just merely seven minutes after coming into the game. San Jose extended their lead to 3-0.

The Earthquakes managed to replicate the feat of a substitute entering the game and scoring, just as Vitor Costa did in the 83rd minute. Costa had been on the field for only a minute before increasing San Jose's lead to 4-0 against Real Salt Lake.
