San Jose Earthquakes Look To Maintain Streak vs. Houston Dynamo

The San Jose Earthquakes have been on a roll within the last few games, including two victories in the US Open Cup, and they look to maintain this recent unbeaten streak when they host the Houston Dynamo in MLS League play.

San Jose have recorded three victories and two draws in the month of May, and they look to continue to push for the U.S. Open Cup after clinching a spot in the quarterfinals. While the tournament clearly has a central focus, the team still manages to demonstrate their strength through the depth of their roster. We observed a hint of this during the draw against the New England Revolution, and it is something we might witness against Houston due to the high number of matches San Jose has played this month already.

San Jose defender Daniel Munie spoke to media today regarding the depth of the team, and mentioned: “I'd say this month has had a bunch of obstacles, in the sense we're going to have nine total games. It just shows how much quality the depth has within this group. Having the ability to go in tough places like Colorado and get a result, or New England and get a result. The next-man-up mentality has been really huge with our group. It just shows how much hard work we put in preseason. None of the group is quitting or giving up. Everyone is ready to go whenever their number is called.”

Houston is coming into the match with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses so far in the month of May coming off a loss in the U.S. Open Cup against Austin FC which ended their run in the tournament. Houston has had an up and down season so far to this point, but do remain only a few points away, currently, from San Jose. Daniel Munie also touched on the matter when asked: “We've touched on them good amount now, and we know what they're capable of. We know they're not doing as well as they might want to be this year so far. We know they have good quality, we know they have a good group and we know they like to play. I think we'll be prepared like any other game. We're going to be ready to go from the first whistle. We know we're at home. It's going to be an important game. Get three points. Especially with two road games coming up. We just want to finish this month strong.”

San Jose is heading into the match with some decent momentum, but unfortunately, they have picked up a few key injuries of note. Goalkeeper Daniel was absent from the recent game against Portland because of a head injury sustained in the match against New England. Chico Arango is expected to be out for approximately 2-3 weeks due to an injury incurred against Inter Miami, but he was spotted in the stands during San Jose's recent game. Although there is some injuries the team has been working hard to have options at any position should they need.

San Jose is currently giving fans of the club plenty of reasons to believe in future performances, whether it be in league play or in tournament play. This month has been a good look into the strength of the club from top to bottom, and how they can tackle situations in which the starters will not be available. It's clear that the success in the U.S. Open Cup has given the team things to look forward to, and the team continues to bring that extra motivation into MLS season play as well.

The MLS regular season match on Saturday against Houston Dynamo FC will begin at 7:30 p.m. PT at PayPal Park. It will be available worldwide on MLS Season Pass through Apple TV (in English and Spanish), and locally on radio stations KSFO 810 AM (English) and 1370 AM La Kaliente (Spanish).
