As the regular season of Town FC nears its conclusion, the team is steadily progressing towards the playoffs. The last two matches they played in were against teams with a similar points total, positioning them well to maintain control over their own fate.
The Town FC recently journeyed to Portland to face the Portland Timbers 2, whom they had previously defeated in the season opener with a strong performance. They aimed to climb the Western Conference standings by securing a favorable outcome at Providence Park.
In their last match, The Town FC were able to secure a penalty kick win against Tacoma Defiance, a match that had Aaron Edwards and Eduardo Blancas name all over it with their own unique contributions. The game came down to penalties after a narrow escape, but The Town FC managed to secure two points and aimed to carry this positive momentum on the road.
Within minutes of the first whistle, Portland was able to get on the board very early with a goal within the second minute of action by Alexis Moreno. He was able to get the ball passed The Town FC Jacob Jackson for an early lead. The goal was scored in the 3rd minute, yet although Portland was able to establish the early lead, The Town FC played with the determination to get a goal back.
In the 20th minute, Alejandro Cano took a solo fast break down the middle of the field in order to get the ball to Eduardo Blancas. Blancas was able to find Riley Lynch on a perfect cross for a header that found its way past the stunned Portland Goalkeeper Trey Muse and deflected off the goalpost and across the line. The game would remain level a 1-1 heading into the halftime break.
Currently in playoff contention, two teams are fiercely competing throughout the game. Both sides are creating opportunities, but The Town FC maintains control of possession. In the 68th minute, Edwyn Mendoza intercepted a pass with a header, placing The Town FC in an advantageous position.
The intercepted ball landed right in front of Riley Lynch who made a short pass to Beau Leroux who galloped his way around a defender, paused, and hit a perfect strike to the right corner to give The Town FC a 2-1 lead. The game concluded with the score intact and it gave The Town FC the +3 points in a much needed victory.
Amid a tightly contested playoff battle in the MLS Next Pro Standings, the outcome of a match can significantly impact the standings of each team. Following their win and acquisition of three points, The Town FC now share the same position with two other clubs. Currently, if the season were to conclude today, they would secure a playoff spot. It is up to them to determine their fate as they approach the conclusion of the season, striving to maintain their momentum towards the playoffs.
