The San Jose earthquakes came into their matchup against Atlanta United FC coming off a strong showing against Sporting Kansas City in which they won the match up 3-0.
A warm and sunny day set the stage at PayPal Park for a week two match up in Major league soccer and there was a buzz in the air as new San Jose Earthquakes signing Timo Werner was in the San Jose Earthquakes kit and warming up on the pitch as he was available as a substitute in tonight‘s game.

San Jose started off the 2026 MLS season with a lot of question marks and there was a lot to be said based off of the decisions made by Bruce Arena and the team in the offseason but a strong performance last week really showcased what the team could be this year. The question following their first game was what are they going to be in the second game?
Bruce Arena once again leaned on his young players and they, like week one, showed they are up to the task. In the first MLS match up between Bruce Arena and Atlanta United FC Head Coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, the Earthquakes came ready to play.

San Jose controlled the ball throughout the entire first half only allowing Atlanta to get past the midfield only a handful of times. The Earthquakes opened the scoring in minute 24 when Jamar Ricketts intercepted a wayward pass by Atlanta’s Lucas Hoyos, moved the ball forward and served a cross from the left wing for Preston Judd, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. This is also Ricketts 2nd assist to Judd this season.
Timo Werner made his long-anticipated Earthquakes and MLS debut in the 61st minute, replacing Preston Judd. As the Earthquakes fans welcomed him into the game, he was ready to make an instant impact. Werner would pass the ball into a tight area to find Ousseni Bouda for a goal giving Bouda his first goal of the season and a debut assist for Werner. San Jose would remain with a 2-0 lead to finish of the game with dominant performance.
Timo Werner commented on his new team and what he has been able to witness since arriving: “We have a very young team, and still, I think a really hungry team. What I see in the past few days when I've been here is that we have also very high quality and I think that's also why they won the first game. That's also why they won the second game. We won the second game today, and we saw it, especially in the first half today. We can dominate teams. We can play around teams.”

The San Jose Earthquakes head into their next game with 2 wins on the season. They travel to Philadelphia to take it on the Philadelphia Union. The Union are looking for their first win on the season as they take on New York City FC today ahead of their game against San Jose.
