United States Advance To 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarter-Finals

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team has had a solid start in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a commanding performance in Group D, showcasing a blend of veteran leadership and young up-and-coming talent under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino has had some criticism by members of the media, but it appears his infusion of US talent, a lot that is coming from Major League Soccer, has paid off.

With the tournament serving as the final competitive tune-up before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host along with Canada and Mexico, the team is under pressure to build momentum and restore fan confidence after a mixed run of results in recent competitions. So far up to this point they have been able to secure a solid start to the campaign.

The USMNT began their Gold Cup quest on June 15, 2025, with a commanding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago at PayPal Park in San Jose, California.

On June 19, the U.S. faced a tougher challenge against guest nation Saudi Arabia at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. The team had yet to miss a beat as they were able to push through hot and humid conditions in Austin, Texas in which they edged out a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

With their victory against Saudi Arabia, the team was able to clinch their spot into the next round, but they were not going to stop with their more recent momentum. The United States traveled to Arlington into AT&T Stadium and we're able to secure the third win in the group stage against Haiti with a 2-1 victory. Pochettino lauded the team’s “professional performance,” though he acknowledged there’s still work to be done. The win solidified their unbeaten group stage record, and look ready to travel to Minnesota for a head-to-head match vs. Costa Rica.

The team has been able prove critics wrong in the early stages of the 2025 Gold Cup, but there is still some area of concern within the fan base. Unfortunately, the United States came into the Gold Cup with two losses an international Friendly's that left a displeasure taste in fans mouths. When you pair that with the absence of star players, including Christian Pulisic, there was a lot of optimism, heading in to this tournament.

I personally had a very unique experience being alongside with team with CONCACAF and Forty-One Magazine, USA, and the one thing that stood out to me is that you can see the hunger that this team has, and you can see that these guys are a unit together, who are attempting to prove everybody wrong, and that seems to be the mentally.

The team’s perfect group stage record is promising, but Coach Pochettino has put a focus on the need for consistency and intensity as they face tougher tests in the knockout rounds.

A potential semifinal on July 2 and the final on July 6 in Houston offer a chance to claim an eighth Gold Cup title and shift the narrative around the team’s readiness for 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After the conclusion of Group Stage matches in Groups A and D, Concacaf has announced that Mexico and Costa Rica (Group A), along with the United States and Saudi Arabia (Group D), have earned places in the 2025 Gold Cup Knockout Stage. They will be joined by the top two teams from Groups B and C, which will be determined on Tuesday, June 24.

The Knockout Stage of the Gold Cup will commence with the Quarterfinals on June 28 and 29 in Glendale, AZ, and Minneapolis, MN, respectively. The Semifinals will take place on July 2 in Santa Clara, CA, and St. Louis, MO, with the Final set for Sunday, July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX.
